If you study well, you will pass the exam; Conditional clauses

ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് വ്യാകരണം പഠിക്കുന്ന കൂട്ടുകാർ നിർബന്ധമായും പഠിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ട വ്യാകരണ ഭാഗമാണ് conditional clauses. if, unless എന്നീ വാക്കുകളടങ്ങുന്ന വാക്യങ്ങളെയാണ് conditional clauses എന്നു പറയുന്നത്.
▪If you come now, you will meet our old friend (നീയിപ്പോൾ വന്നാൽ നിനക്ക് നമ്മുടെ പഴയ സുഹൃത്തിനെ കാണാം)
▪You can”t enter the ground unless you own a ticket (ടിക്കറ്റെടുക്കാതെ നിനക്ക് മൈതാനത്തിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിക്കാൻ കഴിയില്ല)
Conditional clauses എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന വാക്യങ്ങൾ രൂപപ്പെടുന്നത് രണ്ട് ചെറുവാക്യങ്ങൾ ചേർന്നായിരിക്കും. ഇതിലൊരു വാക്യം പൂർണ ആശയം ലഭിക്കുന്നതും മറ്റൊന്ന് പൂർണ ആശയം ലഭിക്കാത്തതുമായിരിക്കും. “If you speak English, you will get an extra privilege” എന്ന വാക്യത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യ ഭാഗമായ “If you speak English” എന്നു മാത്രമെടുത്തു കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ അതിന്റെ ആശയം പൂർണമല്ല എന്നു കാണാം. ഇങ്ങനെ പൂർണമല്ലാത്ത ആശയത്തെ കാണിക്കുന്ന വാക്യ ഭാഗങ്ങളെ subordinate clauses എന്നു പറയുന്നു. ഇനി പ്രസ്തുത വാക്യത്തിന്റെ രണ്ടാം ഭാഗം ശ്രദ്ധിക്കൂ. “You will get an extra privilege” എന്ന ഭാഗത്തിന് പൂർണമായ ആശയം ലഭിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അതിനാൽ ഈ ഭാഗത്തെ main clause എന്നു പറയുന്നു. ഇത്തരം വാക്യങ്ങൾ നിർമിക്കുമ്പോൾ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കേണ്ട കാര്യങ്ങൾ ഇനിപ്പറയാം.
Subordinate clause simple present tense-ലാണെങ്കിൽ main clause-ൽ will + verb ആണ് വരേണ്ടത്.
▪If you study well, you will pass the exam ( നന്നായി പഠിച്ചാൽ നീ പരീക്ഷയിൽ ജയിക്കും)
ഇത്തരം വാക്യങ്ങളിൽ ചിലപ്പോൾ wilI- നു പകരം Can-ഉം ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ട്.
If you start now, you can catch the train.
Subordinate clause-ൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് simple past tense ആണെങ്കിൽ main clause- ൽ would +verb ആണ് വരേണ്ടത്. ചില സന്ദർഭങ്ങളിൽ would – നു പകരം could-ഉം വരാം.
If you studied well, you would pass the exam.
If you started now, you could catch the train.
Subordinate clause ഒരു past perfect tense വാക്യമാണെങ്കിൽ main clause-ൽ would have + verb എന്ന രീതിയാണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കേണ്ടത്. ചിലപ്പോൾ would- നു പകരം could-ഉം ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ട്.
If you had studied well, you would have passed the exam.
If you had started a little earlier, you could have caught the train.
“If not (അങ്ങനെയല്ലാത്ത പക്ഷം)” എന്ന അർഥത്തിലുപയോഗിക്കുന്ന പദമാണ് unless. if ഉപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോൾ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കേണ്ട അതേ കാര്യങ്ങൾ തന്നെയാണ് Unless ഉപയോഗിക്കുമ്പോഴും ശ്രദ്ധിക്കേണ്ടത്.
▪You will not pass the exam unless you study well ( നീ നന്നായി പഠിക്കാത്ത പക്ഷം പരീക്ഷ ജയിക്കില്ല)
▪You would not pass the exam unless you studied well.
▪You wouldn”t have passed the exam unless you hadn”t studied well.

unless ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന വാക്യങ്ങളിൽ സാധാരണ simple Present tense മാത്രമേ വരാറുള്ളൂ. അതിനാൽ മുകളിൽ കൊടുത്ത മറ്റു രണ്ട് ഉദാഹരണങ്ങൾ ഉപയോഗത്തിലില്ലാത്ത ഘടനയാണെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കുക.
unless ഒരു negative word ആണ്. അത് കൊണ്ട് അതിന് ശേഷം negati‌ve word-കൾ ഒന്നും തന്നെ ഉപയോഗിക്കാൻ പാടില്ല എന്ന കാര്യവും പ്രത്യേകം ഓർത്തുവെക്കുക.
▪ Unless we don”t go now, we won”t meet the minister (തെറ്റ്)
▪Unless we go now, we won”t meet the minister (ശരി)
